Your three options when choosing a project management diploma is to attend the Project Management Institute (PMI), do college programs or complete online degree courses. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages which can prove to be more important for specific types of students.

Students who want to have a solid certification which can be applied to just about any type of industry will often attend PMI programs. The course deals with broad project management skills that can be applied to software, hotel management, etc. In addition, the skills that are taught apply just as well to writing a marketing research proposal as planning out the delivery of a new database system. The only real drawback to these courses is the fact that you may not have a PMI training center located close to where you live.

Many students prefer to go to university to complete a project management diploma. These courses can provide greater interaction with other students from broad range of disciplines. The course itself could also have certain specialization (e.g. in technology, pharmaceutical, etc.) depending on the specialty the university focuses upon. The advantage is that you can often obtain a diploma which will be highly specialized for specific industries, though this may be seen as a disadvantage for those looking to maintain their sights on a broad number of industries.

Lastly, doing an online project management diploma gives you the flexibility to study in the evenings while working during the day. These online programs are often much less expensive than attending college in person. While there have been a large amount of scam programs in the past which you should we wary of, a large number of world renowned colleges have started providing online versions of the programs – often a greatly reduced rate. The one thing you have to be concerned about, however, is the lack of interaction with other students which reduces the amount of insights you get into other industries (i.e. the application of the skills being taught).
